Google Announces Stadia, a Cloud-Based Gaming Platform

Exclusives can be a company’s bread and butter, but some companies want to mix things up a bit in big ways.

Google is in no way a stranger to exclusives of its own, just like Apple, but the company wants to expand access to video games in a big way. Today, during the trade event GDC for video game developers, Google unveiled what it calls Stadia. This is not a dedicated video game console by any means, but rather a cloud-based platform where games will be accessible from a variety of devices. That will include web browsers, TVs, computers, and mobile devices.

On stage, Google showed this off by starting a game in a Chrome web browser, continuing to play the game on a phone, and then jumping over to a PC to finish the session. In each case, the player was able to switch devices without losing their place in the game. And Google says its technology means it can stream games up to 60 fps, with support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) and 4K resolution.

Beyond that, Google says it plans on having games support up to 8K resolution and 120 fps frame rate support. But that won’t happen anytime soon.



Google is launching a hardware component to the mix. It’s a dedicated gaming controller (pictured just above), which includes four face buttons, shoulder buttons, and a pair of analog joysticks. There will also be a dedicated “Share” button that will let gamers easily connect to YouTube. There is also a dedicated button for Google Assistant as well.

Google is relying on streaming here, which makes sense considering the reach that Google is aiming for. The company says players will be able to play games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in seconds, on any of those devices. Google showed it off on stage, but that’s a closed demonstration so it will be interesting to see how that shakes out in the real world.

Google wants this to be a way to break down barriers that are currently in place so players have access to more games. Of course, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has been one of the major releases to get love from Google and its Project Stream, but that’s a title that isn’t restricted by any kind of exclusivity agreements and it’s widely available across consoles.

One of the more interesting elements is the ability to quicly launch into a game you are watching on YouTube. So if you are watching a title you like, and if there is a button that says something like “Play Now” you’ll be able to just start playing the title right away:

“The idea is wild: Google Vice President Phil Harrison took to the stage and showed how players will be able to load up a YouTube trailer. At the end of an official trailer, you might see a button that says “Play Now,” and pressing it will launch you straight into whatever game you were watching within seconds. You’ll be able to play straight from the browser itself.”

Will Google be able to actually make games more accessible to players? On a broad scheme, yes — players won’t need to buy a primary video game console, like an Xbox One S/X or even a Nintendo Switch to play games. They’ll just need a browser. But will Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony give up their exclusives? Probably not, no.

Google says Stadia will launch in 2019, but no exact date was provided.

The Apple ID password requirements are password recovery rules you must follow when resetting or creating an Apple ID password in order to keep your account secure.

The Apple Password requirements must be met for the safety and security of your Apple ID. Here are some of the Apple ID password requirements to maximize the security of your Apple accounts.

1. You must use a strong password for your Apple ID.


The two password entries must be of the perfect match before you can proceed.


You must use at least 8 characters that comprise of at least 1 number, 1 uppercase letter, and 1 lowercase letter.

2. You must choose any of the following verification processes during the Apple ID password setup:


Email or Security Question verification


Two-Factory Authentication verification


Two-Step Verification process.

However, without the above proof of your identity, Apple will not let you reset the password or perform any action on your account.
What to Do When Apple password requirements occur?

There are two instances when Apple ID requirement will occur; the first is when you know your Apple ID and password, and the other is when you can’t remember your Apple ID or password.

1. How to Reset Apple ID Password from a Web Browser

Step 1. Log on to https://appleid.apple.com on your computer’s web browser and log in with your Apple ID and password. If choose two-factor authentication or two-step verification, you may have to verify your login.

Step 2. Scroll down to the “Security” section and click “Change Password”.



Step 3. Enter your current password in the field provided, and enter your new password twice. The Apple password requirements will occur at this stage of the process, ensure you follow them as stated in the first past of this article.

Step 4. Click “Change Password” tab to complete the process.
2. How to Reset Apple ID Password from iPhone Settings App

Step 1. Launch your iPhone Settings app.

Step 2. Click [Your Name] at the top of the screen.

Step 4. Enter your iPhone passcode, and enter your new Apple ID password twice: One in the “New” text box and the other in the “Verify” text box.


Ensure that the two password entries are perfectly matched before you proceed.

Step 5. Click “Change” and choose whether to sign out from other devices that share this Apple ID.

BOE Looking to Supply OLED Panels to Apple for Future iPhones

Apple is looking to adopt Samsung’s touch-integrated OLED display in its future flagship iPhones. Apple has so far used a separate touch layer on top of iPhone displays but it is now looking to change that. The switch will allow Apple to design thinner and lighter iPhones.

What’s interesting is that this potential move from Apple has led Chinese OLED maker BOE to build production lines for OLED displays with integrated touch layer as well which have been internally dubbed as Y-Octa. Samsung has so far been the only display maker to offer OLED display panels with an integrated touch panel.

BOE is looking to challenge that as it is setting up a production line by refurbishing some of its existing lines at the B11 plant in Mianyang, Sichuan. The company is looking to win some OLED panel orders from Apple with this move.

“Having seen Samsung create a highly profitable market with the product incorporating the touch sensor, BOE has decided to follow suit,” said an industry source. “The lines are now being built in Mianyang as far as I know.”

Last year, BOE ran a project called L6 to win OLED panel orders from Apple. While that did not happen, it did manage to win orders from Huawei for its flagship smartphone. This year, BOE is going ahead with its L7 project with the aim to once again provide OLED panels to Apple.

Apple has so far exclusively sourced OLED panels from Samsung despite rumors of LG also joining the OLED supply chain every year.
Our Take

What the report does not mention is just how good BOE OLED panels are. While BOE did manage to supply OLED panels to Huawei for its Mate 20 series, the panel’s power consumption left a lot to be desired. Compared to OLED panels from Samsung, BOE’s OLED panel had an absurdly high power requirement and even then, its performance was not as good as the OLED panel on the Galaxy S9 or Note 9.

For BOE to supply OLED panels to Apple, it needs to up the quality of its panel significantly which is no easy task as despite being the market leader, Samsung continues to improve its OLED panels at a rapid pace.

Sprint Calls out AT&T for Misleading 5GE Indicator in Full-Page NYT Ad



Sprint has taken out a full-page open letter ad in the Sunday’s edition of The New York Times calling out AT&T for its misleading “5GE” network indicator. With the iOS 12.2 beta update, iPhones on AT&T network have started showing the ‘5GE’ indicatorinstead of LTE. Some Galaxy phones will also receive a software update to make this change.

Despite the ‘5GE’ indicator, your iPhone will not have magically gained 5G capabilities with a software update. Instead, as per AT&T, the ‘5GE’ logo represents that you are in AT&T’s 5G Evolution market where it is able to offer higher and more stable LTE speeds. Yep, there’s no 5G here. AT&T is simply getting on the 5G bandwagon and purely misleading customers with this move.

Right now, this change is a part of iOS 12.2 beta but once the release goes public, more users will get confused seeing the 5GE logo in the status bar of their iPhone. No wonder then that Sprint has sued AT&T for this misleading marketing tactics. In its full-page NYT ad, Sprint says that while it is working hard on bringing 5G to its customers, AT&T is working hard on misleading its customers.

While Sprint is working hard to deliver mobile 5G and the first 5G smartphone in the U.S., AT&T is hard at work trying to convince you that they already won the race to 5G with something they call “5G Evolution.” That is simply untrue.

Don’t be fooled. 5G Evolution isn’t new or true 5G. It is fake 5G.

They would love for you to believe they are different … better. The truth is AT&T is simply offering customers a nationwide 4G LTE network just like Sprint and all the other major wireless carriers. It’s not 5G.

We filed a lawsuit against AT&T demanding that they immediately end their false and deceptive marketing campaign. AT&T seems to be delighted by the depth and breadth of their deception. AT&T admitted that the company’s 5G E advertising is strictly a narrative to outline how they want the world to work – not a reflection of today’s reality.

AT&T is working on bringing 5G to at least 12 U.S. cities this year but there are no smartphones in the market right now that can connect to it. So instead of highlighting that, AT&T decided to use deceptive marketing to fool its customers into thinking that they are already on its 5G network.

Sprint has already sued AT&T over this misleading campaign.
Our Take

While I can understand Android OEMs bending to the requirements of AT&T and allowing it to display a fake ‘5G’ indicator on their devices, I am shocked at how Apple could allow the carrier to do the same on iPhones. Apple has never allowed this before so it is definitely a strange move. It is possible that with the final release of iOS 12.2, this scenario changes and Apple removes the ‘5GE’ logo with something that is not so blatantly misleading.

We know that Instagram and Snapchat did Stories but did you know WhatsApp does them too? They are called Status and I didn’t know about them until a couple of months ago when someone showed me while writing an entirely different WhatsApp tutorial. I promised to go back to the subject when I got the time and that’s today. This tutorial will show you how to see who viewed your WhatsApp story, how to use stories and how to hide them from prying eyes.






The idea behind the WhatsApp story, or Status, is similar to Snapchat. You can share a pic and a status with friends that stays live for 24 hours and then disappears. It received little of the fanfare that Snapchat Stories did which is why not so many people know about the feature.

The Status tab had been staring me in the face for the longest time in the app but I never took any notice of it. It seems I’m not the only one if my friends are anything to go by with over half of them saying they either hadn’t heard of it or didn’t use it. We seem to be in a minority though because lots of people do use it.

WhatsApp stories are actually called Status and both terms are used interchangeably, I’ll use both here.


HOW TO CREATE A WHATSAPP STATUS POST

It’s probably easiest to think of WhatsApp Status the same as a Snapchat Story. A post showing where you are or what you’re doing at that time that lasts for 24 hours. It is just as easy to use as Snapchat’s too.

Open WhatsApp on your device.


Select the Status icon in the bottom left of the main screen.


Select My Status and then select the camera.


Take your image or video as required.


Add effects, text or whatever.


Select Send.

You can use all of the usual stickers, emojis, text and effects available within the app on your Status that you can within the rest of the app. Once you Send, the Status remains live for 24 hours before disappearing forever.

SEE WHO VIEWED YOUR WHATSAPP STORY

Open your story within WhatsApp.


Swipe up on the eye icon at the bottom of the screen.


See who has viewed from within the swipe menu.

The eye icon at the bottom of the screen has a number beside it. This is the number of people who have viewed your WhatsApp story. When you swipe up you can see exactly who they are and when they viewed it.


CONTROL WHO CAN SEE YOUR WHATSAPP STATUS

The idea of the WhatsApp Status is to show friends what you’re up to and where you are at a given time. You may not want everyone seeing what you’re doing so there is the option to not allow certain people to see it.


Open Status within WhatsApp.


Select the three dot menu icon and Status Privacy.


Select who can see your WhatsApp Status.

You can select all your contacts or specify who sees it. The options are My contacts, My contacts except and Only share with… If there is someone you would prefer not to see your update, you can block them from here. They will not know they have been blocked from seeing it unless someone mentions it to them.

DELETE A WHATSAPP STATUS POST

Even though WhatsApp Status only stays up for 24 hours, there may be instances where you need to remove it faster than that. Fortunately, you can remove a post in seconds should you need to.


Go to the Status screen in WhatsApp.


Long press the three dot menu icon next to your status.


Select Trash from the popup menu that appears.

Your WhatsApp Status will be deleted right away. Anyone in the process of viewing it will be able to finish but once they close it, the update will disappear.

MAKE SURE SOMEONE SEES YOUR WHATSAPP STATUS

If putting it out there isn’t enough for you, you can manually forward your WhatsApp Status to your contacts to a chat if you like. This is a little pushy but if you’re really proud of it or really need someone’s input or opinion, it’s a useful feature.


Select the three dot menu icon next to the status.


Select the Forward icon.


Select from Frequently contacted, Recent chats, Other contacts or use Search to find the recipient.


Select Send once you have selected who to send it to.
